Any pain you feel in your tooth, around your tooth, or when you apply slight pressure to your tooth is considered a toothache. Each toothache has its purpose, and it is up to us to figure out what is causing you pain. If some issues that cause a toothache are not corrected right away, they could lead to bigger problems. At Olive Tree Dentistry in Sunnyvale, Texas, we want you to be completely aware of all the different ways a toothache can start and how it can be solved. It is always better to be prepared than to suffer a painful dental treatment that costs hundreds of dollars. To learn more about toothaches, keep reading below.
We refer to the inside of our teeth as the pulp. The pulp is a soft area filled with many different blood vessels and nerves. When our teeth become damaged, the infection on the pulp will cause extreme sensitivity and discomfort in our mouth. Depending on how much pain you feel when this happens will help you know how severe the issue is. The more pain you feel, the closer you are to a dental emergency. Some of the major reasons a toothache begins are:
- Tooth Decay
- An Abscessed Tooth
- Damaged Dental Work
- Bruxism
- Poor Oral Hygiene
Each of these issues has an easy solution if caught in the early stages. If not, they can develop into serious dental problems that require extensive treatment. When you have a toothache, if you begin to experience extreme discomfort or excessive bleeding at any moment, please call us right away. We will do everything we can to get you into our office and help relieve your pain.
At-Home Treatment
If your toothache is mild and the pain is bearable, there are things that you can do on your own to help reduce pain. Some ideas we have include:
- Rinse your mouth with saltwater. Saltwater is an antiseptic, which means that rinsing your mouth with it will cause all hidden bacteria to die. If you have food stuck in your teeth, it can also help remove it.
- If you are experiencing inflammation or irritation, use a cold compress on your cheek. This can reduce swelling in any blood vessels and help reduce the pain.
- Thoroughly brush your teeth and floss. Your issue could be as simple as a hidden popcorn kernel in between your teeth.
- Use any over-the-counter medications that work for you. We recommend Tylenol and Ibuprofen because there are adult and kid versions. Follow the instructions on the bottle carefully!
After trying any of these issues, it will become very obvious to you very quickly what is working and what does not. If the pain persists, give us a call. It is time to come see the dentist.
