Why is a tooth extraction necessary?

Dr. Koshy may recommend tooth extraction if you have teeth that are severely damaged due to decay or if you have advanced gum disease. Tooth decay often damages the inner layers of a tooth beyond repair, while gum disease can erode the bone and tissue supporting the tooth. If restoration is not possible, extraction will be the only viable option.

A tooth may also need extraction due to a severe infection that cannot be addressed using medication or root canal therapy. Sometimes teeth are broken or damaged beyond repair due to injury or trauma. Teeth may also need extraction if they are blocking permanent ones from coming in, or for orthodontic treatment of a crowded mouth, which makes room allowing the remaining teeth to shift into alignment.

Post-Operative Care

After your tooth is extracted, we will provide you with instructions to keep your extraction site healthy while it heals. We recommend that all patients:

  • Bite gently on a gauze pad to reduce bleeding. This helps to promote clot formation.
  • Take multiple days of rest.
  • Take painkillers as needed.
  • Use cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  • Keep to a soft diet and chew on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Avoid using straws for the first 24 hours.
  • Maintain oral care, while avoiding the extraction site.
  • Call our office if you have any questions or concerns.
