Why November is TMJ Awareness Month

You may have heard of TMJ, but do you know what it stands for or what causes it? TMJ stands for Temporomandibular joint. TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, which is a condition that affects the hinge joint that connects your jaw to your skull. This disorder can cause pain in your face, neck, and shoulders, as well as headaches, earaches, and dizziness. While the exact cause of TMJ is unknown, many factors can contribute to its development, including teeth grinding (bruxism), tooth misalignment, arthritis, and stress.

November is TMJ Awareness Month, so we want to take this opportunity to educate our patients on this condition and what treatments are available.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

As we mentioned, pain in the face, neck, and shoulders is the most common symptom of TMD. However, other symptoms may include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • A clicking or popping sound when you move your jaw:
  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
  • A feeling of fatigue in your jaw muscles
  • Earache or pain in your ear
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please call our office. We can schedule an appointment with our team to get you on track for relief.

What Treatments are Available for TMJ/TMD?

Many treatments are available for TMJ/TMD, and the best course of treatment will depend on the severity of your symptoms. Treatments may include:

  • Over-the-counter or prescription medications to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Bite plates or mouth guards to prevent teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Physical therapy exercises
  • Injections
  • Surgery (in severe cases)

At OliveTree Dentistry, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your unique needs. We understand that living with TMJ/TMD can be painful and frustrating, but we are here to help!

We offer both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. Some of the non-pharmacological treatments we offer include education about TMD, stress management, and lifestyle changes. We also provide a variety of pharmacological treatments, including anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, and pain medications.
